What is DK Weight Yarn

The term DK refers to the yarn weight. It is considered to be a size 3 or light to medium weight yarn.

The Craft Yarn Council (CYC) has created a standard weight system for the U.S. It is based on a number system that starts from 0 (the thinnest yarn) and goes up to 7 (the thickest) yarn. The CYC considers DK weight yarn to be light weight or a size 3.

DK weight is extremely popular with crocheters
Because it is the perfect weight for crochet, DK yarn is very popular with crocheters. As we know, crochet stitches can be a bit heavy, particularly in worsted weight (size 4) or heavier yarns. Sometimes, it’s just a little too heavy for sweaters and accessories, although perfect for afghans, throws and other home decor projects. So, the answer to light weight sweaters, shawls, wraps and other accessories just might be DK (size 3) weight yarn.

Compare DK weight yarn to other weights of yarn
DK weight yarn is thinner than worsted weight but is thicker than sports weight making it a perfect middle ground for a wide range of stitching possibilities. In other words, DK yarn opens up a world of creative crochet possibilities. This light weight yarn usually has drapeability which allows you to crochet beautiful lightweight pullovers and cozy sweaters as well as scarves, hats and other fashion accessories. The thickness or weight of this wonderful yarn allows for a balanced blend of warmth and wearability.

DK weight yarn is ideal for crocheting adorable baby items. From soft and cuddly blankets to baby wearables and accessories. Bundle the baby in handcrafted love crocheted in your favorite DK weight yarn. Also perfect for crocheting home decor items that add a handmade touch with throws and decorative pillows in your own unique creations!

The Patterns for Hats Collections

I have been designing and writing patterns for hats for quite some time. It all started when American School of Needlework published Crochet a Dozen Hats by Nancy Brown. This was a couple of decades ago, and I just kept going from there. Although I have patterns for scarves, shawls, bikinis and other wearables, home decor and baby items, my favorite crochet is hats.

Please go to the Patterns for Hats pulldown on My Pattern Collections on the main menu. In addition to patterns for beanies, there are patterns for berets, cloches and other style hats.

Other Patterns for DK Weight Yarn

As I have stated, DK weight yarn is the best weight for beanies. But it is also a perfect weight for many other crochet projects. From wonderful women’s wear such as sweaters and vests to tiny baby wearables and accessories. DK yarn is not overwhelming. It crochets up softly with stitches that drape and flow.
